Paying for your own care and support

Paying for care is a long-term commitment and you will need to be sure that any arrangements put in place are affordable.

Getting the right financial advice

It is important to be able to access quality, specialist advice to be able to plan and finance care arrangements in later life. These organisations may be able to help you.

We cannot recommend any particular organisation and we may not be aware of all the organisations qualified to provide advice.

Paying for residential care

If you need to go into a care home and you

  • have savings or assets worth more than £23,250 or;
  • your weekly income is enough to meet the cost of your care

It is likely that you will be expected to fund your own stay.

If you think you may need financial help from us we will need to carry out an assessment of your needs.

Paying for care in your own home

If you have savings or assets over £23,250 (excluding the value of your home but including any other property) you are responsible for funding your own care.

If you know roughly what care you would like to arrange, we will offer you the services of our care navigator service. They will be able to assist you in arranging any care you may require.

You may be able to get financial help by applying for attendance allowance.

I need help to decide what care I need

If you are not sure what care you might need and would like to discuss your care and support needs in more detail, you are entitled to a care assessment. This is regardless of your financial situation.

Our policy and charges are explained in more detail in our Non-residential care charging policy.

You may be able to get financial help by applying for attendance allowance. See the GOV.UK website for more details.

Continuing healthcare funding

If you have significant and complex health needs, you may be able to get continuing healthcare funding from the NHS.

You must be assessed by a team of healthcare professionals to find out if you are eligible. They will look at all your care needs and relate them to:

  • what help you need
  • how complex your needs are
  • how intense your needs can be
  • how unpredictable they are, including any risks to your health if the right care isn't provided at the right time
