Wayfinding

Work is taking place to improve wayfinding in Weston-super-Mare. Our appointed contractor, Crestmoor, is carrying out the work. Read our latest news release from 23 June 2025:

Work starts to improve signage in Weston town centre

Weston boasts a naturally wide bay, so the town is spread out. From Royal Sands in the south, to Birnbeck Pier in the north, Weston Woods in the north east and Weston-super-Mare Railway Station to the east.

As part of our work to improve wayfinding in the town, we are installing upgraded signage and design features. We are:

  • refreshing the fingerpost signs and updating the locations people are being signposted to, including Birnbeck Pier
  • installing a new 'breadcrumb' trail in the pavement to highlight landmarks and places at key locations
  • highlighting the route at Spider Lane (between the Royal Hotel and The Winter Gardens) for access between the seafront and the High Street
  • installing three new bicycle racks in the south east corner of the Italian Gardens, opposite NatWest Bank

With a focus on active travel - including cycling and walking - we want to encourage people to move around. From the town centre, to the seafront and up into the woodland, we want to encourage people to discover the many hidden treasures on offer.

The fingerpost signs direct people to a variety of routes that link with regional and national networks including:

  • the North Somerset Tidal Trail, which is the local section of the King Charles III England Coast Path
  • the Pier to Pier Way and the Brean Down Way, an attractive direct cycle route from Brean in Somerset to the south to Clevedon in the north. This is part of National Cycle Network Route (NCN) 33

Audio guide - coming soon

We're working with the North Somerset Disabled Access Group, Vision North Somerset and the Sight Loss Council to create an audio guide. The aim is to help those with visual impairments to navigate around Weston-super-Mare.

We are working with Weston-super-Mare Town Council, which provides the visitor information service for Weston.

Plans for improvement

In May 2024, we announced that we had appointed architecture practice We Made That to design wayfinding improvements. During summer 2024, they delivered a programme to get people involved in that process.

That work, which included the 'Grove Park Gathering' public engagement event, helped to shape proposals.

Thanks to our funder

This project has been made possible thanks to the council’s successful bid for £20 million from the UK government.

This is part of North Somerset Council’s ambitious placemaking vision for Weston.
