Work on The Sovereign begins

Work has started on Weston’s Sovereign Shopping Centre as part of the town’s placemaking investment programme, which will see the centre’s name evolve into The Sovereign.

The ambitious plans taking place within The Sovereign include:

• creating new workspace for business, makers, entrepreneurs, and individuals, offering local flexible working options to meet the increased demand for different types of working

• introducing an attractive new restaurant/café space that will appeal to businesses looking to open a new eatery

• enhancing and refurbishing key parts of the interior and exterior of the building so that access and the outward profile is improved

• providing space to support active lifestyles and wellbeing, such as a cycle hub and rental shop

The refurbishment work is being delivered by a local contractor, ensuring money invested into the project is put back into the local economy.

Cllr Mark Canniford, Executive Member for Placemaking and Economy, at North Somerset Council, said: “Local residents have spoken and they’re clearly supporting the continuation of Sovereign.

“The revamp work taking place at The Sovereign will offer the community a place to meet, work and shop. The high street is rapidly changing, and we need to offer a multi-use space that meets the developing landscape. The Sovereign is a cherished local asset and the lynchpin of the revitalisation of the wider town centre. With this work, we will bring further energy and excitement to the heart of our town.”

Work on The Sovereign will complete in the summer, in time for the opening of SEE MONSTER, which will be located at the Tropicana in Weston.
