North Somerset residents are being urged to be weather aware and stay safe as the council gears up to respond to the threat of Storm Eunice.

A red weather warning has been issued for extremely high winds when Storm Eunice hits tomorrow morning (Friday 18 February). The Met Office had already issued an amber weather warning covering much of England and Wales. This has now been upgraded to a red weather warning for parts of the South West including North Somerset.

The red warning is in place from 7am until noon tomorrow, meaning Storm Eunice is highly likely to cause significant disruption and dangerous conditions due to extremely strong winds

Residents are asked to stay safe and be prepared for possible disruption to roads and services.

Cllr Mike Bell, North Somerset Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Emergency Management, said: “We’re working with our partner agencies across the region to be as prepared as we can be for whatever Storm Eunice throws our way.

“We’re urging people to please stay at home during the worst of the weather. Please stay away from coastal paths, piers and promenades, and parks and woodlands. Don’t risk your safety or that of the people who’d come to your rescue if you got into trouble.

“Our highways team is on standby to help with fallen trees, blocked roads and flooding. We’ll also be closing the floodgates at Weston seafront.

“Stay up to date with the latest advice from the Met Office and do what you can today to be prepared for tomorrow. Secure your property, garden furniture and any other objects that could blow away and become a hazard.

“Always call 999 in an emergency. Report any urgent problems on the roads caused by the storms which don’t need an emergency response to local police by calling 101, so they can pass any issues onto our highway teams as necessary.

“There could be some disruption to our services. We’ll update our website and social media accounts so please check there for information and pass it on to your friends and neighbours who might not be online.”

The council will publish any updates about storm disruption to its services on its website at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/disruption and on its Facebook and Twitter accounts. Follow them at www.facebook.com/northsomersetcouncil and www.twitter.com/northsomersetc.
