Landlords and owners of empty homes in North Somerset are being invited to a free event next month to find out more about help and incentives on offer to support local families find a home.

The drop-in event is organised by North Somerset Council and is open to anyone including those thinking about becoming a landlord, takes place on Wednesday 12 July from 8.45am until 2pm at Stable Games Room, 129 High Street, Weston-super-Mare.

The council’s lettings team will be on hand to discuss the free lettings service they provide to landlords, including information on the new Renters (Reform) Bill and incentives to help home a family in the area.

The lettings team are looking for responsible landlords, and in exchange they will receive long-term support should any problems arise during the tenancy. There are no upfront or ongoing fees to pay for the service.

The team can also help with health and safety assessments, advice on tenancy issues, and provide information about grants and loans available to help get a property ready to let.

Average rent in North Somerset is way above the Local Housing Allowance. This is the amount set by the central government to support rent costs for those on a lower income.

Cllr Jenna Ho Marris, North Somerset Council’s executive member for homes and health, said: “While the cost of living crisis continues to have an impact on hardworking families, we’re committed to tackling inequality across North Somerset.”

Home ownership is out of reach for many, resulting in an overwhelming demand for rental housing which far outstrips available accommodation. With housing prices at a record high, this means many people are simply being priced out of the market.

Cllr Ho Marris added: “Everyone has the right to live in a safe, good quality home and I’m proud that we’re taking action to help those in need to find good quality, safe and affordable homes for a fairer North Somerset.”

“If you’re a landlord, or planning to be in the future, come along to this free event to see how you can help and find out what our lettings team can offer you, including some reassurance on the new Renters (Reform) Bill which was introduced to Parliament in May this year.”

Those at the event will be:

  • Citizens Advice
  • West Country Savings and Loans
  • Lendology
  • National Residential Landlords Association.
