Healthy workplaces event hailed a success

More than 100 people took part in a special Healthy Workplaces event last month, learning more about supporting employees and creating healthy work environments across North Somerset.

The event, which took place at the Winter Gardens and was organised by North Somerset Council’s public health team, attracted a wide range of employers and organisations from across the area.

Attendees heard from workplace health and wellbeing experts as well as ‘stories of change’ from employers who are creating healthier workplaces for their staff. There was also a marketplace of stalls and bitesize workshops showcasing the local expertise in health and wellbeing that workplaces across North Somerset can access.

The council’s Healthy Workplaces team was also on hand to provide information about the North Somerset Healthy Workplaces scheme.

Open to organisations across North Somerset, the initiative offers free tools and advice to help businesses support their employees with a range of health and wellbeing topics.

There is also an awards programme as part of the scheme and, during the event, six local organisations received awards for the work and progress they have achieved to support the health and wellbeing of their staff.

We Are With You, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, Weston Hospicecare, Home Instead, Elborough Care Services and the council itself were all recognised and celebrated on the day.

Matt Lenny, North Somerset Council’s Director of Public Health who spoke at the event, described how well received the day had been:

“It was a fantastic day with so much enthusiasm and engagement. It’s great to see so much interest in the workplace health and wellbeing movement with people recognising the vision for this type of change across different types of organisations in North Somerset.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part, including the speakers who shared their own experiences of their health and wellbeing programmes. There were lots of inspiring initiatives to support staff like support for menopause, general wellbeing, mental health support and generally altering the culture within organisations to improve staff health and wellbeing.

“And of course, a big thank you to our Healthy workplaces team for all their hard work organising the event and their continuing work to highlight the importance of healthy workplaces in North Somerset.”
