Funding available for community food projects

Voluntary organisations, community groups and settings are being encouraged to apply for funding from North Somerset Council for existing and new community food projects across the area.

Projects for North Somerset residents which encourage healthy eating and improve knowledge of and access to nutritious, affordable food could receive up to £10,000.

Applications for projects that reach people from areas that have the highest rates of deprivation or high rates of childhood obesity will be prioritised

The funding is part of the council’s joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy which launched last year.

Cllr Mike Bell, North Somerset Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Public Health, said: “As a council we’re committed to our vision of an open, fairer, greener North Somerset and this includes our work to tackle health inequalities.

“All of us in North Somerset have a part to play in making the area a healthier place to live, to make changes to improve our own health and wellbeing, and to help support others to do the same.

“Whether it’s schemes such as community fridges or educational workshops teaching people about healthy diets, community food projects can play a vital role in helping people access and learn about the importance of nutritious, affordable food.”

“You can apply for up to £10,000 for up to a year. I’d encourage all community focused groups and settings to take a look at the criteria on our website and get your application emailed to us by the end of February. The grants are open to a really wide range of projects including voluntary and community groups, not-for-profit organisations, youth clubs and social enterprises, as well as community settings such as schools, early years and care settings.”
