Conservation management to take place at Cadbury Hill

North Somerset Council will be carrying out conservation management work next week to nature reserve land it owns at Cadbury Hill. This will improve the biodiversity of the site.

Cadbury Hill is a small hill between Yatton and Congresbury.

The first stage of the works will focus on controlling brambles that have started to establish across the grass glades. The work is expected to start next Monday, 31 January, and take around three days. Clearance will be done between 8.30am and 5pm each day.

Due to the machinery being used to complete the work:

  • Residents, including walkers, dog walkers and horse riders, are urged to avoid the area (see map below).
  • Dog walkers using neighbouring woodland are being asked to keep their dogs on leads.
  • The car park at Henley Lane will be out of use.

The work will help to reinstate areas of woodland glades by clearing defined areas of bramble and cutting some areas of grass to allow the growth of different grass species.

The second phase of the work, which is planned to take place in late summer, will involve rolling and bruising the bracken. This limits its ability to regrow, allowing sunlight to penetrate the ground.

It is hoped that this work may help the return of native orchids and other wildflowers previously seen in the area.

Councillor Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and community services, said: “I’m pleased to see this important work taking place to manage what is a beautiful local nature reserve enjoyed by many. I’m particularly pleased to see that this has been timed to take place before the start of the bird nesting season.

“For the safety of everyone concerned – particularly those working on site, walkers, horse riders, their animals and the area’s native wildlife – I urge everyone to follow the guidelines and avoid the area during the hours of operation.”

The work is taking place in the section of the hill owned by North Somerset Council. Neighbouring land including an Iron Age Hillfort, southern slopes and part of the woodland, is jointly owned and managed by Yatton and Congresbury Parish Councils.
