Expansion of Winterstoke Hundred Academy

Construction is now underway on the expansion of Winterstoke Hundred Academy secondary school, which will provide up to 900 school-places in a new building at Parkland Village just outside of Weston-super-Mare.

The expanded school facilities, which are funded through Homes England’s Housing Infrastructure Fund, will help to increase intake so that families from across the area can access local schooling for years to come. It is hoped that the modern teaching facilities will have a positive impact on pupils’ attainment, providing them with opportunities to get the best start in life.

Planning permission for the scheme was granted in September 2021, with construction beginning soon afterwards. The new school building is expected to open in 2023.

On 21 April 2021, North Somerset Council, Cabot Learning Federation and our project contractors, Kier gave presentations about the school expansion at two online engagement sessions.

The presentations included project overviews, timelines and information about proposed designs.

The expansion of Winterstoke Hundred Academy is more than just an investment in a building, it’s an investment in the future of the region, its young people and the environment in which we all live.

We are helping to tackle the climate emergency with an ambitious plan for carbon neutrality by 2030. The school expansion will lead by example, with the building designed to achieve the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) ‘excellent’ rating, certifying its high standard of energy efficiency and environmental performance.

We’re working with Passivhaus-certified contractors, Kier, to ensure modern and sustainable methods of construction are used to help cut emissions and disruption. The building also includes solar panels that will power the classrooms and bike storage areas to encourage more sustainable travel to and from school. The project will protect local plants and wildlife too, through a biodiversity net gain of 10%.

Plans also include a new learning pavilion to be opened before construction begins. The Kier Sustainability Lab will offer both young people and adults the chance to learn how they can access jobs and training in the growing green building industry.
