Yatton High Street Pedestrian Safety Improvements

This consultation is now closed. You can read the results of the consultation here. The original text and files for this consultation are retained, below, for the record.

This package of improvements for pedestrian safety and access through Yatton is using funding from the new residential developments at North End Yatton. It aims to:

  • improve safety and perceptions of safety for people walking, cycling and using other forms of active travel between North End and Yatton village centre, including trips to and from school;
  • increase the proportion of journeys made by active, lower-carbon trips (such as walking, cycling and scooting) within Yatton village, particularly from new developments at North End;
  • ensure the new developments at North End Yatton contribute to making the village a safe, active and attractive place to live, work, study, create, do business and spend leisure time.

Yatton’s District Councillors and Parish Councillors have worked closely with North Somerset Council officers to devise a package of improvements designed to achieve these aims. The detailed plans, covering the area between the B3133/Wemberham Lane Roundabout in the north of the village and the B3133/Claverham Road Roundabout in the south of the village, are broken down into 15 sections. An overview plan showing which section of the village is covered in each plan can be viewed here. To summarise, we are proposing to:

  • introduce a 20mph speed limit to improve road safety;
  • widen footways at some of the narrow pinch points along the High Street;
  • improve crossing points for pedestrians;
  • provide a new access into Yatton primary school through the Co-op Car Park (subject to agreement with landowners);
  • make other minor alterations to signage, road gullies and bus stops to facilitate the works.

Why does Yatton High Street need pedestrian safety improvements?

The village of Yatton has grown in recent years, particularly with new residential development at North End. This has meant that there is now a growing demand for people to be able to walk, scoot or cycle safely to village amenities such as local shops, businesses and schools, and also to places like  the railway station for longer distance journeys or to the Strawberry Line and local footpaths for enjoyment of the village’s rural setting.

The busy B3133 is the central transport route through the village, with both through-traffic and local journeys resulting in high traffic volumes. The often narrow and limited footways and crossing points have meant that the car is often the preferred choice for local residents. This has resulted in people who are able to walk, cycle and scoot, including children getting to Yatton primary school, feeling unsafe along the B3133 with high volumes of cars and larger vehicles passing close by. These are often at higher speeds than feel safe for other users of the limited transport space that we have.

We recognise that some trips need to be made using the car, but we want to make Yatton feel safer and more attractive for people who are able to walk, cycle and scoot. Active travel helps improve people’s physical and mental health and enhances the safety and attractiveness of the village. It will also help the local economy; studies have shown that over a month, people who walk to the high street spend up to 40% more than people who drive there (Transport for London, 2013).

We want to use this public consultation to hear from local residents, businesses and other stakeholders and we are seeking to gain support for the proposals. We also want to hear how we might be able to tweak the plans to improve them. We invite you to respond to our short questionnaire  (closed) to give us your feedback.

Using our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document, we want to help explain other options considered in developing our package of improvements. We felt it was important to explain why other options have not been included.

This consultation will close on 9th May 2021.
