The council’s waste minimisation team has designed a ‘treasure hunt’ style activity to take place along a short stretch of the Strawberry Line in Yatton. Opening on Monday 16 October, it will run every day for 14 days until Sunday 29 October. This is so that families can take part during half-term (w/c Monday 23 October).
The Strawberry Line is a popular and accessible path suitable for those walking and cycling, as well as users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The location is also easily accessible for people using sustainable transport including trains and buses as it starts and finishes near Yatton Railway Station.
Those who take part and collect all the letters to reveal a hidden phrase can choose to enter a free draw to win a prize including vouchers for Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, Court Farm Country Park and Simply Green (a zero-waste shop in Nailsea).
Anyone wishing to take part in The Big Recycling Hunt should:
- Travel to Yatton Railway Station, ideally using a sustainable form of transport, between Monday 16 and Sunday 29 October.
- Walk, run, jog, cycle or wheel along the Strawberry Line towards Congresbury and spot 11 large display boards on display. The trail is approximately one mile long in total.
- Each board will display a letter of the alphabet, alongside a picture and information about common household items and how to correctly reduce, reuse, recycle or dispose of them in North Somerset. Find all the boards and arrange the letters to spell out a phrase.
- To enter the free prize draw, complete a short electronic form accessed using the QR code printed on the display boards. Alternatively, paper forms will be available from the Strawberry Line Café during opening times. Winners will be selected at random from the forms received that give the correct phrase.
Recycle Week, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary, is a national event. It’s part of WRAP’s overarching ‘Recycle Now’ campaign, which aims to motivate more people, to recycle more of the right things, more often.
Councillor Annemieke Waite, North Somerset Council's executive member for climate, waste and sustainability, said: “The average household in North Somerset produced 377kg of waste last year (2022-23). While this is less than the previous year, it’s still a lot of waste.
"Getting people engaged and in the habit of reducing, reusing and recycling from a young age is really important. I’m therefore pleased to see our waste minimisation team designing such a creative solution to help educate people about what to do with common household items. I encourage as many people as possible to get involved and have a go at the trail. What a brilliant free and fun activity for families this half-term!"
Weston-super-Mare businesses the Grand Pier and Revo Kitchen & Terrace will turn green for a week from Monday 16 October to help to raise awareness of Recycle Week 2023.
