The results of a review into an active travel scheme on The Beach and Hill Road in Clevedon have been announced tonight (Monday 20 November).

The review findings have been published on North Somerset Council's website and are being presented at a public meeting at Christchurch, Chapel Hill in Clevedon this evening.

Over 300 people were expected to attend the public meeting after the allocation of tickets online, from Clevedon library and on the door on the night.

The review has been completed by transport design and engineering experts AECOM and has considered issues raised by local people and businesses as well as the professional views gathered through scheme audits. These include the design and safety of the scheme, access for disabled people, and those living nearby and whether users understand the new arrangements. It has also considered any impacts on trade and parking.

The review report has been supportive of many elements of the scheme including the new 20mph zone, the one way system and the improvements to Hill Road.

The report has also made a number of recommendations including:

  • Removing parallel parking and replacing it with angled sea-facing parking on The Beach
  • Removing the two-way cycle path and replacing it with a contraflow cycle path to the eastern side of The Beach
  • Introducing a coach pick up/drop off point and loading bay and formal pedestrian crossing on The Beach
  • Making changes to the mini roundabout on The Beach.

Cllr Mike Bell, the Leader of North Somerset Council said: "Throughout this process we have been committed to being open about the findings which is why we are sharing the report’s results with the community as soon as it's available and giving them the opportunity to ask questions about the findings.

"We will also ensure that any decisions about what we do next will be made in public."

Cllr Hannah Young, North Somerset Council's executive member with responsibility for active travel added: "Thank you to AECOM for their thorough, detailed report and to the community for sharing their views. We are reviewing the recommendations closely and will come forward quickly with proposals for the Executive to consider."

The review’s recommendations will now be considered at the next meeting of the council's Executive at 2.30pm on Wednesday 6 December. The meeting will take place at the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare and is open to the public.

The full review report and a short summary document can be found at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/clevedonreview. The agenda and accompanying reports for the Executive meeting will be available on the council's website the week before the meeting.
