Bookstart and children's library

All of our libraries have areas designed especially for children, to help them explore our wide range of children’s books and resources.

We have lots of books available to encourage children to read, including board books for babies, illustrated picture books, audiobooks and series of books for children who are learning to read.

There is no charge for books damaged by children under five years old, but if items are lost then you will have to pay to replace them.

We also have our Reading Well for Children collection. It includes titles to help children aged 7-11 and their families with feelings, worries, daily life and getting through a tough time.

Bookstart

Bookstart is a free national programme to help families read together every day and inspire a love of reading.

From October to March every year we celebrate the BookTrust Storytime Prize across our Libraries. During these celebrations you'll have the chance to hear six specially selected stories read to you and your child, and cast your vote on which one is the best book for sharing. You’ll also be able to pick up a free special collectors’ book for your child, with which they can collect stickers each time they visit the library.

We’re looking forward to seeing you for these exciting free sessions at North Somerset Libraries. For more information on which library is hosting the celebrations please visit our events calendar.

Usually your child will receive the Bookstart baby pack from your health visitor at their six-to-eight-week check.

There are also dual language packs available for children who speak English as a second language and starting school in September 2023.

Additional needs packs are available via the North Somerset Portage Team.

If you think you have missed out on receiving a Bookstart pack, email our Bookstart co-ordinator at bookstart@n-somerset.gov.uk.

Please include:

  • your name
  • contact details
  • name of the library you wish to collect the Bookstart baby pack from

You can also contact any North Somerset library, who will forward your details onto our Bookstart co-ordinator.

Rhyme and story times

We hold regular Bookstart rhymetimes and story times for children under five. During these events our experienced staff bring stories and rhyme to life through action rhymes, picture books, songs and music.

There are safety measures in place at all our Rhymetimes and Storytimes. Booking in advance is essential. Find out when sessions take place and how to book on our Google events calendar, or by contacting your local library.

If you can’t make it to a library, our previous online Rhymetimes are available on our YouTube channel.

Online children's library

We have collections of eBooks, eAudiobooks, online comics and graphic novels, and more. Find out more about what’s available online at the LibrariesWest website.

Lego clubs

We have restarted our Lego Clubs at selected libraries. Simply bring along your imagination and get ready to build. There are safety measures in place and spaces are limited, so booking is essential.

These sessions are suitable for adults and children aged four and over. All children must be supervised by a parent or carer. If you can, please wear a facemask.
