Weston-super-Mare town centre is to be granted £1.7m for Weston General Stores – a project focusing on repurposing vacant retail space in the town centre to deliver workspace opportunities to entrepreneurs, new shared trading space for retailers, business support and skills, learning and employability opportunities.

The funding is part of the national £900m Getting Building Fund (GBF) which has been made available to councils across the country for investment in local, shovel-ready infrastructure projects.

Cllr Mark Canniford, Executive Member for Business, Economy and Employment at North Somerset Council, said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed working patterns for many people. This project will support local working, and better connect those people to the town centre experience, support new trading opportunities and generate an increase in footfall across the day and throughout the week.

“This is a fantastic opportunity take forward our placemaking in Weston and offer local people opportunities to reconnect with their town centre."

Vacant town centre space will be repurposed to offer:

  • workspace for Weston-based employers and people working away from the office
  • meeting rooms and collaborative spaces for workshops
  • events space for teaching, learning, rehearsal and performances
  • trading space for collective retail models, such as the Weston Collective who will continue to have an important role to play in the town centre or collection of online purchases
  • space for good quality food and drink
  • shared and open space for back office functions such as printing and reference libraries
  • bookable community space
  • a cycle hub
  • space for makers and micro-manufacturers
  • a health centre – the council will continue to work closely with Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group on town centre health centre opportunities

The West of England Combined Authority has been allocated £13.7m from the GBF for a wide-ranging package of projects that will deliver a vital boost to the local economy. Weston has received an allocated grant from this funding for Weston General Stores.
