Work starts on third phase of Dolphin Square
Building contractors will start moving on to Dolphin Square in mid-November to start the construction of the £18m third phase of the regeneration project.
Once the initial site preparation has been completed, piling will start in January 2016 with the steelwork to follow and doors expected to open in the summer of 2017.
“This has been a complex development to deliver and we are delighted that we have secured both the operators and funding to enable this next element of Dolphin Square to start now,” said McLaren Life’s Alastair Bell.
“We have a list of exciting names and brands coming to Weston, many of them new to the town, including restaurants and leisure operators. The cinema will also be one of the most advanced in the southwest with 1,600 seats in eight screens and with a new format auditoria for Cineworld.”
Cineworld is currently joined by Nandos, Prezzo, Pizza Express, Mimosa Buffet and the Brazilian restaurant Preto as well as Costa Coffee.
McLaren Life have also signed Rock Up, an indoor climbing and soft play company, who currently trade from a leisure scheme in Fareham, Hampshire and a health and fitness operator.
The company is also working to secure occupiers for the remaining retail and restaurant units during the course of next year.
Funding for the scheme has been secured through a pension fund client of Knight Frank Investment Management. The building contract has been awarded to Exeter-based Dawnus Construction who are expected to complete the scheme in the Spring of 2017, ready for operators to fit out their units.
Leader of North Somerset Council, Cllr Nigel Ashton, said “We have been working with McLaren Life to get this project completed, so this announcement is wonderful news for Weston and a valuable contribution to the council’s town centre regeneration programme.
The development demonstrates that leading names in the retail and leisure industry share my confidence in the future of Weston and will help to unlock the real potential of the town centre. The revival of Dolphin Square will generate new vitality right in the heart of Weston, acting as a catalyst for further investment.
Alongside other major town centre projects, which include Walliscote Place and the Winter Gardens, the development of this really key site will add further momentum to the regeneration of the town as a vibrant place to live and learn, with a thriving and diverse leisure offer.”
