Thanks to an £85,000 project fund, secured by North Somerset Council from Sport England and the Lawn Tennis Association, the once dilapidated tennis courts in Weston-super-Mare have been given a new lease of life.
The council has recently completed the works, which included a total resurfacing of all three courts, new fencing and an automated gate access system which will allow users to book online and have instant access. Temporary lining has been provided to enable the courts to open - they will be fully painted and lined when the weather improves.
The courts will open from Monday 29 March but bookings are open now. Those looking to book can choose from two options:
• pay and go - £6 for an hour on the court
• annual membership - £35 allowing your household to book throughout the year.
When booking you will be provided with an access code for the keypad on the entry gate. To book your court go to https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/AshcombePark or www.n-somerset.gov.uk/ashcombetenniscourts.
Cllr Mike Solomon, the council's executive member for communities, tourism and leisure, said: "Bringing these courts back into use will be of great benefit to the health and wellbeing of the local community.
"The cost of hiring the courts will pay for their regular maintenance. Any surplus funding will be put back into improving the park, helping to secure the future of this valuable community asset."
