North Somerset libraries celebrate World Book Day

North Somerset libraries will be joining in the international celebrations this World Book Day (Thursday 3 March), offering the perfect place for everyone to find a book they love.

Libraries across the area will be celebrating the special day as they help children recover from the disruption the pandemic has caused to education.

Children who have not received a £1 World Book Day token at school will be able to collect one from their local library.

From Monday 28 February until Thursday 31 March, or until stocks last, children aged up to four years old will be able to collect a free book at a library, when they borrow books on their library card, as part of a Bookstart Treasure Pack.

Libraries will also be celebrating World Book Day during their weekly Rhymetime and Storytime sessions for children under five and their parents or carers. Some of the sessions need to be booked in advance. Book your spot and find out about other library events taking place at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/libraryevents.

Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Services, said: “The shared mission of both World Book Day and North Somerset libraries is to promote reading for pleasure. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.

“Both World Book Day and North Somerset Libraries want to help children recover from the disruption caused by the pandemic by encouraging a life-long love of reading, which will support their educational achievement across all subjects including Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).”

Cllr Catherine Gibbons, Executive Member for Children's Service and Lifelong Learning, said: "World Book Day is exciting and gives more children than ever the opportunity to discover a love for reading. The line-up of £1 books for 2022 has something for every child - whatever stage they are at beginning, early, or fluent, and independent readers. Please do visit your local library!"
