New boat launch site coming to Portishead

Small boats will soon be able to launch at the southern end of Portishead marina following construction of a new water access point by North Somerset Council.

The council has been working with Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club, Portishead Pilot Gig Club and Quay Marinas, who control the water area, to complete the design of a scheme which will include a new ramp and steps and a small public seating area to view the activity in the dock. It will also include fixed platform public launch areas and a managed gated small slipway. The stepped height platforms will allow small craft such as canoes, and paddle boards easy access, no matter what the water depth is in the dock.

Facilities will also be improved for disabled sailors with a manual hoist available through the local clubs to assist access to boats.

The slipway will also be gated to ensure safe access and to prevent unregulated or unsuitable craft from using the water. This will enable the small slipway to be used by local clubs, particularly for sail training for young people.

Work on the £130,000 scheme is due to start on site towards the end of April and expected to last about two months. Construction will be carried out by local builders E J McGrath. Part of the dockside path will be closed during the works, and an alternative route will be signposted.
