Libraries in North Somerset are hosting an exciting new digital skills programme this Spring.

The programme starts in the February school holidays with two workshops for children aged nine to 12:

  • Learn to make a chatbot with Python at Yatton Library and Children’s Centre on Tuesday 22 February
  • An electronics workshop to create wearable technology at the Campus Library in Weston-super-Mare on Wednesday 23 February.

These will be followed by six-week coding courses at Yatton Library and Children’s Centre, Nailsea Library and the For All Healthy Living Centre Library in Weston for children aged nine and above, starting on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 March. Children will develop their coding skills, learn to think logically and solve problems in a fun environment.

Further courses and workshops at Weston Library in the Town Hall, Nailsea Library and the libraries at the Campus and the For All Healthy Living Centre are taking place in April and May.

All sessions will be delivered by local training organisation Codingbug. Booking is essential. For more information about all the sessions and to book a place visit https://codingbug.co.uk/learntocode/ or pop into your local library.

In the next few months further free introductory sessions are planned in all libraries for early years children, their parents and carers. In addition, a series of hands-on workshops will offer adults the chance to try out something new. "I remember my son learnt to code on a Sinclair ZX and it took around two hours to code 'Hello'," said North Somerset Council's executive member for neighbourhoods and community services Cllr Mike Solomon.

“This is an exciting opportunity for residents in North Somerset to learn more about coding and develop their creative digital skills. These skills are vitally important for our economy and jobs market and it’s great to see children getting off to a good start in their local library."

This digital skills programme is funded through the UK Community Renewal Fund as part of the North Somerset Works Together project. North Somerset Council, in partnership with local organisations, received more than £2.8m of government funding from the UK Community Renewal Fund.

North Somerset Works Together is one of four projects delivering this investment in skills, communities and businesses, and supporting people into employment. For more information go to www.n-somerset.gov.uk/crf.
