Key Bristol Airport route gets upgrade

Update Friday 21 June: Work is due to go ahead as planned. See North Somerset Travel and Roads on Facebook or Twitter for live updates.

Update Friday 14 June: Due to the poor weather we’ve been experiencing and the forecast for more rain, the decision has been made to postpone these works. Depending on the prevailing weather conditions, the works are now planned to go ahead next weekend (Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June).

A quick and effective upgrade of a major road near Bristol Airport will keep the route moving for future years.

North Somerset Council will surface-dress a six-kilometre stretch of the busy A38, between the South Bristol Link Road and the junction with Downside Road, across the weekend of Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June.

Surface dressing costs around a quarter of full resurfacing options and takes days rather than weeks to complete. It increases the life of a road by up to 12 years, protects it from water damage and improves surface skid resistance, which makes the road safer.

The A38 surface dressing will be carried out between 5am and noon on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June. Traffic heading out of Bristol towards the airport during these hours will be diverted along South Bristol Link Road, A370 and Brockley Combe.

Outside these hours, the A38 will be open with temporary reduced speed limits until line painting is finished later in the week.

Cllr James Tonkin, North Somerset Council’s executive member with responsibility for roads said: “Surface dressing is an excellent way for us to maintain as many roads as possible with the budget available.

“As well as being cheaper, it is also faster than other options, meaning we can keep disruption on this very important route to a minimum.

“Treating roads in this way also prevents them declining and needing a much more expensive repair in the future.

“We are working closely with Bristol Airport to ensure their passengers and staff are aware of the need to allow extra travelling time.”

Drivers are urged to be patient during the works and people due to arrive at Bristol Airport between 5am and noon on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June are advised to allow extra journey time.

The work will be carried out by North Somerset Council’s contractors, Skanska, and will cost £380,000.
