Half term A road closure in North Somerset

A major North Somerset road will be closed for a £70,000 upgrade later this month.

The A371 West Street, which runs through Banwell, will see drainage repairs, ironwork improvements and will be partly resurfaced during the eight-day closure, which will start on Sunday 20 February.

A signed diversion route will be in place using the A371, A368 past Locking, A370 to Long Ashton, and A38 through Churchill and Sandford.

Banwell High Street will also be closed, meaning no traffic will be able to pass through the village during the half-term works.

For local traffic to homes and businesses around the site, which runs from East Street to West Street car park, marshals will be available 24 hours a day to allow access when it is safe. As it will be a very busy working site, there may be a wait while this is organised.

North Somerset Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Services, Cllr Mike Solomon, said: “This is an important scheme for Banwell as the metal works along that stretch of road, such as drain covers, have become damaged with the amount of traffic rolling over them every day. This has made them loose and very noisy for the people who live nearby.

“Normally we’d do this kind of work overnight, or using traffic lights, but this isn’t possible here as this section is far too narrow. We don’t have space for a lane of traffic to move through the site and still be able to work safely, and it’s too close to homes for the amount of light and noise we’d cause if we worked overnight.

“This road is due a significant upgrade as part of the Banwell bypass scheme, so we are keeping these works to a minimum to reduce the impact of the closure. The drainage works are essential, and we will take the opportunity while the road is closed, to carry out patching of the surface as well.”

The work is being done during the school holiday as traffic modelling shows the roads are usually quieter. It will be carried out by Milestone Infrastructure on behalf of North Somerset Council.

The scheme may cause some disruption to recycling and waste collections for residents in Banwell, Sandford, Winscombe and nearby villages, as vehicles and crews work around the closure during the week.
