‘Don’t be a Dick’ this festive period
Revellers in Weston-super-Mare are being asked ‘Don’t be a Dick’ during their Christmas and New Year celebrations.
North Somerset Council’s Community Safety Team has teamed up again with partners, including Avon and Somerset Police and Weston-super-Mare PubWatch, to run the ‘Dick and Franny’ campaign in a bid to make drinkers think twice about their behaviour during nights out over the festive period.
It is aimed at 18 to 30-year-olds who will be out enjoying Weston’s pubs and clubs and remind them what can happen if they overdo the festive cheer.
The campaign features two characters – Richard and Francesca – in a series of different situations, reflecting the most common problems people cause or encounter on a night out.
Cllr Felicity Baker, North Somerset Council’s executive member responsible for community safety, said: “This campaign is aimed at the minority who have a few too many and who then start to cause problems, either for themselves or others. We hope it will get them to think twice before they do something they will probably regret when they’ve sobered up.”
This year, the Dick and Franny duo fall foul of new Public Space Protection Orders – such as being fined £75 for peeing in the street.
Community Safety Officer Harry Mills said: “The Public Space Protection Orders are being used by officers in the night time economy to tackle anti-social behaviour in public places, such as urinating in the street, more effectively. This benefits residents, businesses and their customers by making North Somerset a desirable place to live, visit and work.”
The eye-catching campaign is one element in a programme of joint initiatives aimed at reducing alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder and supporting a more diverse night-time economy in Weston-super-Mare.
Acting chair of PubWatch, Hayley Johnson, said: “We want everyone to have a safe night out by drinking responsibly and ensuring alcohol doesn’t ruin their or anyone else’s Christmas. This is why we are supporting the council’s ‘Dick and Franny’ campaign to help create a safe and enjoyable night out for everyone.”
