Clevedon improvements changed after public consultation

A £500,000 scheme to make parts of Clevedon more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists has been changed following suggested improvements by residents and businesses.

In March residents, businesses and visitors were encouraged to have their say on proposed changes to The Beach and Hill Road.

The proposals for public realm improvements include:

•    Pavement widening and better crossing facilities
•    More seating and planters
•    Cycle lanes and cycle parking
•    One-way roads on key streets
•    20mph speed limits
•    Additional car parking.

Over 1,000 responses were received during the six-week consultation period and North Somerset Council has made a number of changes to the scheme as a result.

The changes include:

•    Providing more car parking than before for the area as a whole
•    Reducing the speed of cyclists and ensuring pedestrian safety
•    Providing new dedicated loading facilities for businesses to prevent delivery vehicles blocking pavements
•    Ensuring access to driveways
•    Providing plants and trees at suitable locations.

Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council's executive member with responsibility for sustainable travel said: "The aim of this scheme is to improve The Beach and Hill Road for all users. By widening the pavement and providing more informal crossing places, along with lower traffic speeds, we hope to improve how everyone can move around the area.

"New segregated cycle lanes will help movement by bike and eventually form part of our aspirations for a Pier to Pier cycle route from Weston-super-Mare to Clevedon. More outdoor seating and plants will enhance the pleasant streetscapes and aid economic recovery for local businesses.

"In order to deliver these changes some road space needs to be reallocated, resulting in a one-way layout for The Beach and Hill Road and car parking relocated to Elton Road."

Work on installing the improvements is due to start in January and is expected to take 12 weeks to complete.
