Changes to the A5 bus service
Changes to the route and timetable of a North Somerset bus service come into force next month.
Following a review of local service A5, which connects local villages to Bristol Airport, the service will operate four return journeys from Winscombe to Bristol Airport via Wrington, with three return journeys to Winford and Felton. An additional journey will operate back to Winscombe in the late afternoon.
Due to low passenger numbers, the link from Langford to Congresbury and Yatton will no longer operate. These changes will come in from Monday 4 February.
North Somerset Council has worked with Carmel Bristol to reintroduce a Saturday service following customer feedback. The new timetable will also improve connection times at Bristol Airport, providing better connectivity with bus services towards Weston-super-Mare.
These changes have been introduced to ensure that the service is financially sustainable for the operator. Lower than predicted passenger numbers have led to the A5 not earning the required fares revenue so the new timetable aims to reduce operational costs while responding to customer feedback and better catering for passenger demand.
Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s deputy leader and executive member responsible for transport, said: “We have recently had to review the route and timetable for the A5 to ensure that it remains financially viable for the operator to continue running the service. Passenger numbers have so far been lower than anticipated and I therefore encourage local residents to support this bus service to safeguard it for the future.”
Carolyn Alderton from Carmel Bristol said: “We are keen to continue operating this service for local people and these changes make this possible. We have used passenger data to influence the revised service. For example, journeys to Congresbury and Yatton carried on average less than two passengers per journey and it was therefore not viable to continue operating to these locations. However, we hope passengers will benefit from the new Saturday service and improved connection times at the airport.”
Bus service A5 is operated by Carmel Bristol and is funded by contributions from Bristol Airport as part of their expansion plans and commitment to supporting local communities.
