Bournville school crossing patrol

A North Somerset school has a school crossing patrol thanks to sponsorship from an insurance company.

Bournville Primary School in Weston-super-Mare was successful with a bid to Churchill Insurance for a crossing patrol to be funded outside their school, as part of a nationwide campaign by the insurance company.

Since 1 September the school crossing patrol service has been run as a traded service by North Somerset Council. No other funding had been identified for the Bournville Primary School site.

Sharon North is working at Bournville Primary as part of a wider campaign by Churchill Insurance, launched in partnership with road safety charity Brake and leading parent champion PTA UK, to improve road safety at schools.

Earlier this year, Churchill Insurance’s campaign (launched in partnership with road safety charity Brake and leading parent champion PTA UK) received 50,000 nominations for over 6,000 primary schools across the country to be provided with a Lollipopper before being reduced down to a final 50 schools across the UK.

Sharon said: “I love being part of the community and helping to keep children safe as they cross the road.”

North Somerset Council’s deputy leader and executive member for highways, Cllr Elfan Ap Rees,  said: “In these times where we are having to save millions and millions of pounds from our budgets, it’s good to see schools seeking sources of alternative funding. Congratulations to Bournville for being successful as one of only 50 schools across the country.”

Lucy Brooksbank from Churchill Insurance added: “We’re delighted that Sharon North is able to continue as the Lollipopper for Bournville Primary School.”

North Somerset Council is currently looking for school crossing patrols for schools including Milton Park which is also being funded by Churchill Insurance.  If you are interested in the role and want to find out more visit Schools are also looking for businesses and town and parish councils to fund school crossing patrols where there is evidence that one is needed.
