Bookstart and children’s library for under 10s

All our libraries have areas designed for children to explore our wide range of children’s books and resources. We have lots of books to encourage children to read, including series for beginner readers at different levels.

There is no charge for books damaged by children under five years old, but if items are lost then you will have to pay to replace them.

Bookstart is a free, national programme to help you share books with your child from an early age.

Your child will receive the Bookstart Baby Pack from your health visitor at their six to eight week check, and the Bookstart Treasure Pack from their nursery or early years setting in the year before they start school.

Your child can get books in dual languages if you speak English as a second language.

Rhyme times and story times

We hold regular Bookstart rhyme times and story times for children under five, accompanied by a parent or carer. Enjoy action rhymes, picture books and singing to music with your children. Experienced staff help bring stories and rhyme to life. Sessions are free. Check with your local library for days and times.

Bookstart Bear Club

The Bookstart Bear Club is a free club to help pre-school children enjoy their visits to the library. Join the club at your library.

Every time your child returns books or attends a rhyme time or story time session, they will collect a stamp. When they have six stamps, they will be given a certificate – there are ten certificates to collect.
