Re-registering a birth

You can re-register a birth when the natural father’s details were not included at registration, or when natural parents have married after a birth was first registered.

Not re-registering a birth could have implications on your child in later life in matters of legitimacy and inheritance.

If the person whose birth is being re-registered is aged 16 or over and their name is being changed at re-registration, their written consent is needed.

To re-register a birth, please complete  the relevant form and contact us to make an appointment:

Most re-registrations can be authorised locally, but occasionally the registrar general must be consulted. We will let you know if this applies to your application.

Telephone to book an appointment at either office or email us with your enquiry.
