Register a birth or death
What we need to register a birth
To register a birth, you need to tell us:
- date and place of the child’s birth
- full name, date of birth, occupation and place of birth of the parents
- full name being given to the child
You’ll need to bring some documents with you that confirm your name, place and date of birth and your marital status, such as:
- passport or birth certificate
- driving licence
- marriage or civil partnership certificate
- any name change documents
Types of birth certificate
From November 1 2017 we will no longer offer the free ‘short’ certificate at the point of registration.
The registrar will be able to give customers a certificate of registration if for any reason you do not wish to purchase a certificate.
The cost of a full birth certificate is £11 at the time of registration. A full certificate includes details of parents’ names, occupation and place of birth as well as the child’s details.
Babies born outside North Somerset
If your baby is born outside of North Somerset you can register the birth ‘by declaration’ at any Register Office in England or Wales. If you register by declaration you won’t receive birth certificates immediately – they will be sent to you once the registration has been competed in the district of birth. This usually takes about a week.
Birth, notice of marriage and civil partnership appointments are currently unavailable.
