Deaf Awareness Week 2019
This year’s Deaf Awareness Week in North Somerset takes place from Monday 6 to Friday 10 May 2019. The theme is ‘welcome to my world’.
We will be showcasing the work of a variety of people and organisations that support deaf and hearing impaired people, while offering everyone the chance to discuss their situation and find out about the services available.
Anyone who is interested in finding out more about being ‘deaf aware’ or learning British Sign Language is very welcome to join us at any of the activities listed below. We would love to meet you.
Activities during Deaf Awareness Week
Monday 6 May
A small team will be in Weston High Street from 11am to 12.30pm handing out leaflets for deaf awareness week. Please feel free to come and talk to us.
Tuesday 7 May
Information stand at the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare and our Castlewood offices in Clevedon with information about specialist services, equipment, British Sign Language and lipreading classes and local social groups for deaf and hearing impaired people.
If there is nobody at the stand in the Town Hall, ask reception staff and they can ask a team member to come down and see you.
Wednesday 8 May
‘Services day’ at the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare from 10am to 3pm. Come and join us and our partner agencies to find out what is available in North Somerset for deaf and hearing impaired adults.
We welcome – Action on Hearing Loss, Avon Fire and Rescue, Citizens Advice North Somerset, Hearing Dogs, Sense, Vision North Somerset, Weston College as well as the local deaf community.
Come and meet us and our amazing hearing dogs too!
Action on Hearing Loss will be providing hearing checks for anyone interested and Avon Fire and Rescue will be available to advise and take referrals for smoke alarms that assist deaf and hearing impaired people, lipreading games and a chance to ‘experience’ dual sensory loss will also be available.
We will be visiting two primary schools in Weston for storytime in British Sign Language, deaf awareness and meeting Cazzie our hearing dog.
Thursday 9 May
Join us at the Sovereign Centre in Weston-super-Mare for ‘celebration day’ from 10am to 2pm where we will have an information stand with some of our partners, come and meet our lovely hearing dog Gus, see how equipment and services can help people at home. Find out about British Sign Language and lipreading courses available in North Somerset. Try our lipreading games and ‘experience’ dual sensory loss.
Also we will be visiting another two primary schools in Weston for more stories in British Sign Language and our hearing dog Cazzie will be visiting too.
Friday 10 May
‘Communications Day’ we will be based at the stand in the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare with information and equipment, there will be an opportunity to join a deaf awareness/British Sign Language session or deafblind awareness sessions. There will be a deafblind awareness meeting in the morning in Castlewood, Clevedon. In the afternoon there will be both deaf and deafblind awareness sessions in the Town Hall and will last approximately one hour. Leaflets will be available at the Town Hall and Weston General Hospital in Weston-super-Mare as well as at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon about all of the organisations that are taking part.
Monday 13 May
Hard of hearing group are meeting in the community room at Vision North Somerset (3 Neva Road, Weston) from 2pm to 4pm. This is an open afternoon for anyone interested – members will be inviting family and friends and anyone interested is very welcome too. We will have tea and coffee and homemade cakes to enjoy, good company and the chance to try some lipreading and British Sign Language activities. Thursday 16 May
All welcome to Communication Café (Coffee1, 18 High Street, Weston-super-Mare) from 10am to noon. Please join us for a coffee and tea and some communication! Stay as long as you like.
Tuesday 21 May
Deaf pub are meeting at SASS bar (16 – 18 South Parade, Weston-super-Mare) anytime after 7pm, all welcome for a sociable evening communicating in British Sign Language.
Support groups for deaf people
Fourth Friday of the month, noon-3pm
St. Andrew’s church hall, Old Church Road, Clevedon
Mainly for BSL and bi-lingual users, this social group share a meal, invite speakers and sometimes go on visits. The group worker is hearing and fluent in BSL so can interpret for any hearing speakers.
Third Thursday of the month, 10am-noon
Coffee#1, High Street, Weston-super-Mare
This sociable group is open to both deaf and hearing people. It appeals to all ages and is the most popular with younger deaf people. Health professionals, charities and organisations also drop in to consult and get feedback.
Hard of hearing group
First Monday of the month, 2-4pm
Vision North Somerset, Neva Road, Weston-super-Mare
This popular social group is mainly for older people who have lost their hearing later in life. It features regular speakers and lip reading skills.
Deaf church and social group
Second Sunday of the month, 3pm
Emmanuel Church, Oxford Street, Weston-super-Mare
This Church of England service is held in both BSL and English. A social tea afterwards starts at about 4.30pm and everyone is welcome.
Deaf Pub @ The SASS Bar
Third Tuesday of the month, 7pm onwards
SASS Bar, 16-18 South Parade, Weston-super-Mare
The Deaf pub group meet at the SASS bar for an evening group for both Deaf and hearing people communicating in BSL
Very friendly and sociable, people travel from all over Somerset, Bristol and Bath (and further!) to meet up with old friends and to make new ones. This group is supported by local deaf and hearing community, Weston college and North Somerset council.
