Public Space Protection Orders - 2022

This consultation is now closed. For results contact the contact named in the following text. For the record, these are the consultation materials.

Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) were introduced in North Somerset in October 2017 and are part of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. They are designed to deal with a particular nuisance or problem in a public space that is detrimental to the local community's quality of life by introducing a number of restrictions and/or requirements which will apply to everyone.

The existing PSPOs enable North Somerset Council and Avon & Somerset Constabulary to deal with low level anti-social behaviour that relates to psychoactive substances, street drinking / alcohol related anti-social behaviour and encouraging responsible dog ownership. For detailed information on the existing orders please visit www.n-somerset.gov.uk/pspo

These orders have resulted in the Council being able to deal effectively with a wide range of complaints by using the orders when appropriate and proportionate to prevent further low-level disorder.

In response to concerns from residents and businesses, North Somerset Council is consulting on proposed new Public Space Protection Orders to allow the council and partner agencies, such as the police to deal more effectively with a wider range of anti-social behaviour issues in our public spaces.

This is an opportunity for you to offer your feedback, thoughts and questions relating to this proposal. Please have a look at the documents and answer our questionnaire (closed)

Please note this consultation closes on Friday 8 April 2022.

Have your say

The proposed PSPOs are centred on improving and protecting the local area for the people of North Somerset whether you live, visit or work here. All opinions are valued in helping shape the future of North Somerset.

Project Information

Aim of this consultation The purpose of this survey is for you to tell us what you think about our eight proposed
Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs).
Close Date 08 Apr 2022 23:59
Consultation Topic
  • Communities: including local partnerships, neighbourhoods, equalities, crime and anti-social behaviour
Context for this consultation A PSPO can be made where the council is satisfied that behaviour which has a persistent or continuing detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality. The council can only impose restrictions which are reasonable and justified.

The proposed PSPOs are designed to ensure the law-abiding majority can use and enjoy public spaces without experiencing anti-social behaviour. The orders are not intended to disrupt peaceful activities and are used explicitly for addressing nuisance or annoyance.
