Major improvements to the A368
A £450,000 scheme to improve the A368 (Bath Road) will start on Monday 25 March.
The extensive works between the A38 Churchill traffic lights and the border with Bath and North East Somerset, are part of North Somerset Council’s ongoing commitment to improving the area’s roads.
The aim of the scheme is to prolong the life of the road surface by preparing it for surface dressing in summer 2020.
The preparatory work will include patching and resurfacing areas of the existing road surface, improving and cleaning drainage, replacing and relaying the kerbs, road marking and signing improvements, clearing overgrown vegetation and replacing and repairing damaged ironworks.
Due to the nature of the scheme, the road will be closed in phases from the junction with the A38 (New Road/Bristol Road) to the North Somerset boundary to allow crews to work safely and complete multiple activities at the same time.
Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s executive member with responsibility for roads said: “We appreciate that this scheme will be disruptive but investment in repairs continues to be high on our agenda and we remain committed to maintaining and improving roads across North Somerset.
“We are carrying out these extensive works in phases to minimise disruption and we urge people to be patient while these essential works are carried out. Please avoid the area if possible.”
To minimise disruption to road users, the following phased work and road closures will be used:
• Phase 1 – A38 Churchill traffic lights to B3134 Burrington Combe
• Phase 2 – B3134 Burrington Combe to The Batch, Rickford
• Phase 3 – Sladacre Lane to the North Somerset boundary
• Phase 4 – Surfacing at the junction with B3134 Burrington Combe
The scheme is due to take six weeks to complete and work is set to be carried out between 8am and 5pm. The road closure will remain in place 24 hours a day to protect unfinished work with residential and access to local businesses only.
Signage will be in place throughout the work and traffic marshals will be positioned at key locations to advise on access arrangements.
The following diversions will be used:
