Free event in the Italian Gardens

Preparations are well under way for a free event to mark the arrival of Weston-super-Mare’s newly improved Italian Gardens.

The West of England Local Enterprise Partnership awarded £2.478m of funding to support the project, and the work is now nearing completion. Improvement works, which started on site in January  have involved installing a 158,000-litre capacity storm-water retention tank, laying 16,500 granite slabs, and opening up the area by removing sections of the historic wall between the square and Italian Gardens.

Alongside other major town centre projects, which include the redevelopment of Dolphin Square and Weston College’s development of a Law and Professional Services Academy at the Winter Gardens, the improvement of the Town Square area will add further momentum to the regeneration of the town as a vibrant place to live, with a thriving and diverse leisure offer.

The Gardens Party, a family-friendly festival, is being held on Saturday 5 August from noon onwards to celebrate work finishing on site. Get ready for an afternoon and evening packed full of entertainment suitable for all the family! Expect knockout performances from North Somerset’s very own Samba Band who will be bringing sounds of samba to Weston, the Rock Choir who are sure to get the audience moving, and other fantastic live music acts such as acapella sea-shanty singing group The Barnacle Buoys. The Carny Villains, a circus show band from Bristol who are known for their high energy shows, will be headlining the event. You certainly won’t be able to resist their engaging performance which will have the entire audience laughing and dancing!

Other live entertainment will include outstanding performances from Paka and The Incredible Fire Horse, a full-sized fire-breathing mechanical horse, and Elsie the Dragon, a giant dragon created from formed steel.  Street performers, including Rimski’s Bicycle Piano, will be keeping the party spirit going throughout the day and into the evening, before the fun-filled event rounds up at 10.30pm with a remarkable Fire Troupe Finale performance.

There will be a wide variety of food and drinks outlets to keep the whole family happy, and there will also be a bar area.

Make sure you don’t miss the fun!
