Alfred Street

We’re carrying improvement works to change the layout around Alfred Street in Weston-super-Mare so that traffic can turn right from Locking Road into Alfred Street.

Work started on Monday 9 January and will take up to three months to complete.

The improvements will make the journey for traffic heading from Locking Road to the north of the town centre simpler and quicker. It will also make more space for pedestrians, cyclists and buses in Alexandra Parade and improve road safety.

Due to the nature of the work there will be times when there are lane closures, narrow lanes and diversions in place. It’s likely that we’ll resurface the road overnight as we’ll need to close the road to do this. We’ll provide as much notice of this as possible and we’ll post details of road closures on this page.

Access to properties will be maintained as much as possible and we’ll have staff on site who can assist road users with access arrangements.

The cost of the scheme is £260,000. It’s funded by money from the government’s Local Growth Fund and the Joint Local Transport Plan. Skanska are carrying out the work on our behalf.

The scheme is progressing well and we’ll be resurfacing the road from 8pm on Tuesday 21 March.

We’re going to carry out the resurfacing overnight in order to minimise disruption to this busy area and we’ll be closing the road so that our crew can work safely. We expect the resurfacing to take four nights to complete. The closure will be in place from 8pm to 6am each night.

The diversion will be via

  • Regent Street, Walliscote Road, Station Road and Francis Fox Road or
  • Francis Fox Road, A370 Hildesheim Bridge, B3440 Drove Road, Ashcombe Road, Milton Road and Baker Street
