The Strawberry Line heritage trail
The Strawberry Line is a 10-mile route that takes you through varied landscapes of wildlife-rich wetlands and rural villages between Yatton and Cheddar.
The entire path is has a limestone dust that is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Used primarily for walking and cycling, though horse riding is permitted along a one mile section between Dolemoor Lane and Carditch Drove between Congresbury and Sandford.
The Strawberry Line follows the dismantled Cheddar Valley Railway Line from Yatton Railway Station to Cheddar, forming part of the national cycle network route 26 (NCN 26). We are responsible for the section of line between Yatton Railway Station and the A38 in Somerset. The Strawberry Line Society are responsible for the line from the south of the A38 to Cheddar.
The majority of the route is designated as a Local Nature Reserve, providing habitats for a diversity of wildlife. The rhynes at the Yatton end of the line are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the national importance of the aquatic plant communities the rhynes support.
The eight mile long line is physically broken in a number of places by the A370, A38 and minor roads.
The line can be accessed from the villages of Yatton (Yatton Station or Biddle Street), Congresbury (A370, and Dolemoor Lane) Sandford (Carditch Drove, Nye Road, Station Road) and Winscombe (Ilex Lane, A371, Recreation Ground, Fullers Lane, King’s Wood, A38). There are also a number of footpaths and bridleways that link with the route.
Parking is available in Winscombe, Sandford, Congresbury and Yatton. The main car parks are the Yatton Railway Station car park (there is a charge for using this car park) and the Winscombe Recreation Ground car park which is free of charge. There are no designated car parks for the Strawberry Line.
Southern Resilience Scheme
Bristol Water are carrying out a £27m scheme to improve the security of water supply to their customers, including in North Somerset.
As part of the project, the Winscombe section of the Strawberry Line will be used to lay new water pipe. The path will be diverted while the works take place.
