Community learning courses

If you are interested in a subject not currently listed please let us know, we are always open to new ideas.

If you organise, or are part of a group that would like a course personalised to your needs please do get in touch. 

All participants will need to be minimum age 19, and live in North Somerset. Most will either be in receipt of certain means tested benefits or have qualifications less than a full level 2.

Upcoming courses - from March 2024

Introduction to IT

A great course for anyone wanting to build up their confidence with computers.

Learn new skills such as:

  • using the mouse/touchpad and keyboard
  • how to create an email address
  • how to use the free Google document editing resources
  • how to keep safe online

Where you can take it: North Somerset Training Hub, 31 Alexandra Parade, Weston-super-Mare BS23 1QZ.

  • course duration: Mondays and Wednesdays 9:30-11:30am for 5 weeks
  • start date: from 15 April

Office skills

This short course can give you the tools for a career in administration.

Topics covered will include how to use Word, PowerPoint and Excel for work. This includes using features like inserting tables and charts, creating presentations, and adding formulas and functions.  

You will also learn how to create ‘signatures’ and ‘out of office’ replies used in business emails. Tips for proof reading, avoiding scams, and staying safe online will be included.

Access to a laptop or computer is required.

Prepare to work in Adult Social Care

Gain a Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care. Learn about ways of working in this meaningful role that will help you prepare for a successful interview. 

In this course you will explore the range of service provision and roles within adult social care. You will learn to understand principles such as Duty of Care, Person Centred Care and confidentiality.

  • course duration: Tuesdays and Fridays 9.30am - 2.30pm for 6 sessions
  • when can you start:  from 16 April

Woodwork for women

An introduction to woodwork for complete beginners in a relaxed non-competitive environment. 

Learn hands-on skills and carpentry techniques. Build confidence to safely use hand tools. Find out more about options for gaining more skills and/or experience.

  • where can you take it: In person at The South West Skills Campus, Locking Road, Weston-super-Mare BS22 8NL
  • course duration: Fridays 9.30am -2.30pm for 5 weeks (to be confirmed)
  • when can you start: from 26 April

Prepare to pass the driving theory test

Improve your understanding of the rules of driving and the Highway Code. 

Gain confidence answering multiple choice questions and learn how to approach the Theory and Hazard Perception Tests.

  • Where can you take it: in person at North Somerset Training Hub, Weston-super-Mare BS23 1QZ
  • course duration: 
    • Tuesday mornings 9.30am -12 pm for 6 sessions or;
    • Tuesday evenings 6-8.30pm for 6 sessions
  • When can you start: both start 30 April 2024
