General election 2017

A general election is to be held on Thursday 8 June 2017.

To vote you must be:

  • on the electoral register
  • aged 18 or over
  • a British, Commonwealth, Irish or European citizen registered to vote as a UK resident.

The deadline to add your name to the electoral register is midnight on Monday 22 May.

Key upcoming dates:

  • Monday 22 May – last date for registration
  • 5pm, Tuesday 23 May – deadline to apply for a new postal or postal proxy vote
  • 5pm, Wednesday 31 May – deadline to apply for a new proxy vote
  • 7am-10pm, Thursday 8 June – polling day
  • 10pm, Thursday 8 June – counting starts.

Postal votes

If you make a valid application for a postal vote by Friday 28 April, we will send that out to you on Monday 22 May.

If you make a valid application after Friday 28 April and before 5pm on Tuesday 23 May, we will send it out to you by Friday 26 May.
