Deaf Awareness Week 2018

This year’s Deaf Awareness Week in North Somerset takes place from Monday 14 to Friday 18 May.

We will be showcasing the work of a variety of people and organisations that support deaf and hearing impaired people while offering everyone the chance to find out about their needs and the services they can access.

Tuesday 15 May, 10am-2pm

We’ll have a stall in the Sovereign Centre in Weston-super-Mare where you can come and meet hearing assistance dogs and their owners.

Wednesday 16 May, 10am-2pm 

We’ll be hosting a ‘services day’ in the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare which will include:

  • hearing dogs
  • audiology
  • SENSE
  • Citizens Advice
  • Action on Hearing Loss
  • Deaf Equipment Service
  • Avon Fire and Rescue

You’ll be able to sign up for a home safety visit with Avon Fire and Rescue and take an online hearing check.

Thursday 17 May, 10am-4pm

We’ll be hosting a ‘communication day’ in the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare which will include:

  • coffee and cakes
  • a deaf and blind awareness session
  • lip reading sessions
  • British Sign Language taster sessions

Leaflets will be available at the Town Hall and Weston General Hospital in Weston-super-Mare as well as at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon about all of the organisations that are taking part.

Support groups for deaf people

Friday group – fourth Friday of the month, noon-3pm

St. Andrew’s church hall, Old Church Road, Clevedon

Mainly for BSL and bi-lingual users, this social group share a meal, invite speakers and sometimes go on visits. The group worker is hearing and fluent in BSL so can interpret for any hearing speakers.

Communication café – third Thursday of the month, 10am-noon

Coffee#1, High Street, Weston-super-Mare

Ths sociable group is open to both deaf and hearing people. It appeals to all ages and is the most popular with younger deaf people. Health professionals, charities and organisations also drop in to consult and get feedback.

Hard of hearing group – first Monday of the month, 2-4pm

Vision North Somerset, Neva Road, Weston-super-Mare

This popular social group is mainly for older people who have lost their hearing later in life. It features regular speakers and lip reading skills.

Deaf church and social group – second Sunday of the month, 3pm

Emmanuel Church, Oxford Street, Weston-super-Mare

This Church of England service is held in both BSL and English. A social tea afterwards starts at about 4.30pm and everyone is welcome.
