Food businesses

You need to register if you run a food business that stores, prepares, distributes or sells food from a premises, including:

  • cafés
  • canteens
  • caterers
  • child care providers
  • food delivery vans
  • hotels
  • individuals who are caterers
  • market stalls
  • mobile catering vans
  • restaurants
  • shops

You must register with us 28 days before you start trading.

If you have not heard from us by the end of the 28 day completion date you will be able to carry on as though your application has been granted. Normally only people banned from running a food business by the courts are refused registration. If your application is refused you can contact us to discuss your case.

There is no cost to register a food business.

Some manufacturers handling products of animal origin may need to be approved by us or the Meat Hygiene Service. Contact us if you are unsure of what you need to do.
