 PROGRAMME OF STUDY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Pupils should be given the opportunity to:

a) Identify some important events in their lives and important events that might happen to them as they get older.
b) Learn about how important times in life are marked or expressed by different groups, eg birth, marriage, death, being welcomed into a group, naming ceremonies.
c) Identify some artefacts and symbols associated with events that mark important times in life.
d) Share ideas about what it is that makes important times in life significant or special.

 

WHERE THIS SAMPLE UNIT FITS IN

This unit is designed for Year Y1 – Summer Term. It connects with units 2 and 8 in dealing with the world in which we live and with units 3 and 7 in dealing with ways of expressing religious ideas, beliefs and feelings. There are illustrative examples given for 4 religions, though it would not normally be expected that material from more than two religions would be used in any depth .

TIME: This unit is planned for 14 sessions of 50 minutes each.

OBJECTIVES FOR LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

C1 Recognise symbols used in Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam and recall elements of stories as conveyed through forms of religious expression.
C2 Identify and give a possible meaning or message underlying an example of religious expression.
C3 Make simple links between a range of examples of religious expression and the religious beliefs/ideas/feelings which underlie them.
E1 Respond, in the light of their own experience and thoughts, to stories or pictures which may cause people to wonder/question.
E2 Identify aspects of life which may cause people, including people with a faith commitment, to wonder/question.
E3 Compare their own ideas about life on earth with those of others, including people with a faith commitment
