ENVIRONMENT AND CREATION

A Whole-School Cross-Curricular Focus Unit Based on RE
By Antonia Gwynn (Shipham CofE VC First School)

This unit begins with a Collective Worship session based on the letters of the word CREATION. How many words can children make from the word, 'CREATION'?

This can produce three spin-off areas, such as:

Each of these areas may then be set in the context of:

  • the six areas of enquiry;

  • coverage of religions; and

  • the scheme of work units in Awareness, Mystery and Value, together with suggestions for cross-curricular learning.

The Unit should be undertaken and discussed by a whole school so that the activities and ideas in each area can be shared out if necessary. Each area has art, drama and dance activities which might contribute to a presentation at the end.

It is also suggested that prayers are also written in each area which could be used in a final Collective Worship.

This is not intended to be a ‘pick up and use’ plan. There are so many excellent resources, particularly on the internet, that only some of the possible sources and links are included.
