The best way to pay your council tax is by Direct Debit.
If you don't pay, we could begin legal proceeding which could lead
to court or even imprisonment.
Who has to pay council
tax?
You have to pay us council tax if you are over 18 years old and
live in a property as your main home in North Somerset.
Who is responsible for paying council
tax?
If more than one person owns or leases a property they will be
equally responsible for paying the bill. If the property is
unoccupied, the owner remains liable for council tax. The person
billed is the one who comes highest in this list:
- a freeholder living in the property
- a leaseholder living in the property
- a tenant living in the property
- a licensee living in the property
- any other person - including squatters
How is the amount of council tax
payable by each property determined?
The amount you pay in council tax every year depends on the
value of your home. Every domestic property in North Somerset is
allocated to one of the eight council tax property bands which in
turn sets the amount of tax you have to pay.
What are the property
bands?
- Band A - Up to £40,000
- Band B - £40,001 to £52,000
- Band C - £52,001 to £68,000
- Band D - £68,001 to £88,000
- Band E - £88,001 to £120,000
- Band F - £120,001 to £160,000
- Band G - £160,001 to £320,000
- Band H - More than £320,000
The bands are based on the estimated sale value of your property
on 1 April 1991. Properties built after this date are valued
as if they had existed on 1 April 1991.
How are the band values set and
what can I do if I disagree with the banding?
These bands are the same throughout England and allocated by the
Government’s Valuation Office Agency (VOA)
which is an executive agency of HM Revenue and Customs. Read our
property
band appeals FAQs to find out how and when you can apply to
have your property band reviewed.
