If you disagree about your liability for paying council tax you can appeal.
Under what circumstances can I appeal against liability to pay council tax?
You can lodge an appeal if:
How do I make an appeal?
You will need to make your appeal in writing to our council tax customer services team stating the grounds of your appeal. Your appeal should be supported by any relevant evidence or documentation.
I'm not satisfied with the outcome of my request, is there anything I can do?
If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your request or have not received a reply to your appeal within two months you have a further right of appeal using the Government's Valuation Office Agency's (VOA) Valuation Tribunal Service.
Who decides the outcome of my appeal?
Valuation tribunals that are totally independant from the Governments Valuation Office Agency and the Council will decide your case. Normally their decisions are final, however, an appeal may be made to the High Court but only on a point of law.
How is the appeal conducted?
The tribunal will contact you to arrange a date for a free hearing but if both parties agree, your case can be dealt with in writing.
Do I need to continue to pay during the appeal process?
You should continue to pay your council tax during the appeals process as failure to do so will result in recovery action being taken.
What happens if my appeal is successful?
If your appeal is successful all overpaid council tax will be refunded on request.
