We are improving well according to the Audit
Commission.
The independent government watchdog believes we are
demonstrating an overall two star performance.
Since our initial assessment in 2002, when we were rated fair,
the Audit Commission has
recorded a number of improvements in our services, including social
services, education, the administration of benefits and how we
manage our performance.
Social services has progressed, moving from a one star rating in
2003 to two stars serving most children and some adults well.
The work of our environmental services has ensured recycling has
increased and a strategy is now in place to advance other aspects
of waste management.
Last year the Audit Commission introduced a tougher assessment
called The Harder Test. The new framework means we will have to
attain a higher standard to achieve the same rating.
We underwent a corporate assessment in March 2006. The result
will be published in December. This will be combined with scores we
have received for use of resources and services to give us an
overall star rating.
More detailed information including a scorecard for councils
throughout the UK is available on the
Audit Commission
website.
