The square opposite Weston’s Grand Pier is to receive
special recognition when it is officially named next
week.
During her visit to Weston-super-Mare on Monday 25 July, Her
Royal Highness The Princess Royal will unveil a plaque in the
square naming it ‘Princess Royal Square’.
Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “I am
thrilled that the square is being named after The Princess Royal.
This is a wonderful honour for the town, and a fitting seal of
approval for the area.
“Her Majesty The Queen came to the seafront in 2007 during her
visit to North Somerset, and The Princess Royal also very kindly
visited us after the Grand Pier fire in 2008.
“Having shown so much interest in our town, and all the work
that has been going on here recently to rebuild the pier and
improve the seafront, this really is recognition at the highest
level, and something of which the whole area should be proud.”
The square will become the newest addition to this area of town
with strong royal connections joining the likes of Regent Street,
Royal Parade, Victoria Square, Alexandra Parade and the
Sovereign Centre.
