A series of measures are in place to ensure postal
and proxy voting at elections in North Somerset is
secure.
Under the
Electoral
Administration Act 2006, Electoral Registration Officers are
required to obtain two personal identifiers from all postal and
proxy - a person authorised to act as a substitute - voters.
These identifiers are their signature and date of birth and will
be stored securely.
At elections they will be used to compare against signatures and
dates of birth required on special security statements to be
returned with each postal vote.
In early 2007 all existing postal and proxy voters received a
letter and form from the Electoral Registration Officer and all new
application forms ask for these identifiers.
If you are unable to provide a consistent signature because of
any disability or because you cannot read or write, the Electoral
Registration Officer may grant you an exemption.
