Electors in North Somerset can petition for a
referendum to be held to elect a mayor.
The
Local Government Act 2000 gave
power to the Secretary of State to make regulations that require a
local authority, which has received a petition, to hold a
referendum to decide if the authority should appoint an elected
mayor. The Local Authorities (Referendums) (Petitions and
Directions) (England) Regulations 2000 were introduced for this
purpose.
These Regulations require North Somerset Council to publish the
minimum number of signatures which would be needed to support a
vaild petition requiring the council to hold a referendum on
whether or not the district should have an elected mayor.
The minimum number of signatures (equivalent to 5% of the
district's local government electorate) is 7669 for any petition
submitted to the district between 1 April 2008 and 31 March
2009.
