We issue and grant society lottery permits
for those who wish to run a lottery competition in North
Somerset.
We do this under the Gambling Act 2005 while the
Gambling
Commission regulates larger scale lotteries such as the
National Lottery.
A lottery is the distribution of prizes by lot or chance where
there is no degree of skill involved and the chance of winning is
secured by payment.
A permit is required for organisations which propose to raise
money for charitable, sporting or other similar purposes. The
fundraising normally occurs through sweepstakes or raffles.
However, the following lotteries do not require a
licence:
- Small one-off events such as fetes or dinner dances where a
raffle is incidental to the main event taking place.
- Not-for-profit private lotteries run by private societies, work
places or residential premises
Each annual permit lasts one year. You can visit our
fees and charges page for information about initial
and renewal costs.
Application forms are available
