Certain money-lending businesses and those
offering goods or services on credit need a licence to operate
within North Somerset.
Called a consumer credit licence they also apply to
certain credit brokers, debt collectors and those who adjust or
counsel on debt.
Trading without these licences is a criminal offence and can
result in a fine and imprisonment.
The licences are issued by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT)
which can be contacted via email at
enquiries@oft.gsi.gov.uk
or on 08457 224 499.
Businesses dealing with first charge mortgages, payment protection
insurance and other types of insurance may also require further
permission in order to trade.
They should contact the Financial Services Authority
(FSA) on on 020 7066 1000 for this permission.
