Council tax bills are sent out under the
assumption there are two adults living in a
property.
However, relief is available to reduce your bill under certain
circumstances.
If you live in a property on your own you are entitled to a 25%
reduction known as a personal discount.
If your property is not a main home up to a 50% discount can
apply. For further information contact our
Customer
Services.
The following people and groups are also not counted when
looking at the number of adults living in a home and are therefore
not liable for council tax:
- Children under 18 years
- People over 18 years for whom child benefit is still being
paid
- Certain school leavers under the age of 20 and who have
finished a full-time course between 1 May and 31 October
- People with severe mental impairment who are in receipt of
certain disability and attendance allowances
- Qualifying students
- Certain YTS trainees under the age of 25 years
- Student nurses
- Certain apprentices
- Long-term and permanent hospital patients
- Certain people resident in residential care homes, nursing
homes or mental nursing home and hostels
- Most people in prison
- Certain care workers
If any of these people share a property with you then you may be
entitled to a discount.
