Our aim is to stop all types of fraud within North
Somerset.
It is the task of our Fraud Investigation team to prevent and
detect this crime across the district and we specifically target
council tax and housing benefit fraud.
We have set specific targets for reducing this abuse of public
funds and are already making progress in the fight against
fraud.
By March 2005 we had identified in excess of £250,000 in fraudulent
benefit claims resulting in the successful prosecution or receipt
of an appropriate sanction in 43 cases.
Housing
benefit and council tax benefits are both open to fraud and we
deal directly with handing out both benefits.
These services are currently handled by our partners Liberata
who are signed up to our verification framework scheme in bid to
battle benefit fraud.
The framework sets standards for the collection of evidence to
support housing benefit and council tax benefit claims and is
helping to cut down on fraud levels.
